La Cappella Underground was established in times of political and creative enthusiasm in a deconsecrated chapel in the city of Trieste, in Italy. A very unusual location indeed, though quite well suited for a Film and audiovisual research and experimentation Centre, founded by a group of visual arts experts and lovers.
The year after La Cappella was born, 1969, saw the creation of the film section. What came into existence was not just one more cultural circle but a place totally out of the ordinary where underground , experimental and independent films could be seen and enjoyed.
In 1999 a research study was initiated for the retrieval and classification of material and documentation about the “Science Fiction International Film Festival” which was held in Trieste from 1963 to 1982. In the year 2000, La Cappella Underground decided to restore the Festival, bringing back the best science fiction to Trieste, and giving the Festival a new name: Science Plus Fiction.
Today La Cappella Underground owns a very specialized fantasy, horror and science fiction film archive, including a collection of more than 250 films. Moreover, thanks to an equally valuable archive of audiovisual materials – amounting to 15.000 titles to date, but still growing – La Cappella Underground has become a major reference not only for film archives, associations, national and international academics and researchers, but also for all the many fans of the fantastic and science fiction genres.
